How to Style Names of Food
How to Style Names of Food How to Style Names of Food How to Style Names of Food By Mark Nichol When it comes to names of comestibles and beverages, whether to capitalize proper names that are part of their names can give one indigestion. Merriam-Websterââ¬â¢s Collegiate Dictionary tends to uppercase such terms though it often (but not always) advises that capitalization is not necessary but The Chicago Manual of Style recommends lowercase forms. The Associated Press Style Book, the guide of record for newspapers and many magazines, tends to vary more arbitrarily in its guidelines. Hereââ¬â¢s some food for thought: Merriam-Websterââ¬â¢s capitalizes names of cheeses derived from geographical locations Brie, Cheddar, Stilton, Swiss but they can safely be lowercased without confusion, which is what The Chicago Manual of Style recommends. Several names for types of meat frankfurter, hamburger, and wiener derive from place names, but notice that theyââ¬â¢re all lowercase. France, once the epicurean center of the world, has inspired much nomenclature about food French bean and French bread, just to name two but the adjective in ââ¬Å"french friesâ⬠refers to the type of cut, so itââ¬â¢s generally not capitalized. Scotch is not necessarily capitalized when it refers to whiskey, but it is uppercased in ââ¬Å"Scotch brothâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Scotch egg.â⬠Bourbon is not capitalized. Names of cocktails are often uppercased ââ¬Å"Bloody Mary,â⬠ââ¬Å"Harvey Wallbangerâ⬠especially, as with these examples, if theyââ¬â¢re named after people (but note margarita). But alcoholic drinks named after locations (daiquiri, manhattan) arenââ¬â¢t capitalized, except for ââ¬Å"Irish coffee.â⬠One particularly difficult area is names of foods from other countries. Because the names are transliterated and may come to English through more than one middleman language, more than one spelling may enter the language. When in doubt, remain loyal to one style guide or a periodical about cooking. If a term has not yet been included or mentioned, search for it online with various spellings and see how authoritative Web sites treat it. What about menu items? On an actual restaurant menu, itââ¬â¢s acceptable to capitalize names of dishes, because they are the equivalent of headings on that type of document, but names of ingredients in a descriptive passage below the item name should not be capitalized unless they already deserve that distinction. However, in text, words used to describe something served at a restaurant should be lowercase unless theyââ¬â¢re place names (ââ¬Å"Peking duckâ⬠), brand names (ââ¬Å"chicken-ââ¬â¢nââ¬â¢-Cheetos), or house concoctions (ââ¬Å"Sous-Chef Sammyââ¬â¢s Lava Soupâ⬠). Sexual Predator Prosecution Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 2
Sexual Predator Prosecution - Research Paper Example In order to further prevent their predatory activity, the registered sex offenders are prohibited to own or have in their possession a certain type of motor vehicle such as the ones used for the retail sale of frozen desserts which can hide children in it (New York State, 2006). These laws are constantly reviewed. A sexual offender that is registered and under surveillance who refuses to provide the necessary information demanded of him such as any change of address or address of the work location may be charged with class E felony once convicted. This means that he is bound to stay in prison for a period over a year. This also applies to the sexual offender that fails to comply with the laws on telephone use with special numbers or the internet restrictions on certain websites. If the offender commits the same crime twice or is convicted for the second time, then he will be charged with class D felony making him go back to prison for another term of not less than a year. If the sexual offender violates the section of the act on the issue of motor vehicle used, he is charged with class A misdemeanor which means he will go to prison for a term of not more than a year (New York State, 2006). The mandatory conditions given to sexual offenders and which is specified under several of Congress laws such as 18 U.S.C. 3583(d) and U.S.S.G 5D1.3 (a) specify that the defendant should not commit another offense while he is under supervision by the parole officer. He is also to avoid from use of control substances unlawfully and this may necessitate drug testing on an impromptu basis. The defendant is to also try and make restitution with the victim of the offense he committed which will under the supervision of the parole officer or even a police officer depending on the victimââ¬â¢s request but never alone (Brown & Campbell, 2010). The discretionary conditions imposed by the court only take place when there is

Discuss in detail the components of the Balance of payments account Essay
Discuss in detail the components of the Balance of payments account - Essay Example The BOP is the countryââ¬â¢s way of monitoring the international trading of its product and service offerings, and financial assets (Melvin and Norrbin, 2013, p.59; Cool and Goddard, 2006, p.92, Stovel, 1959, p.21). When a country receives money, it is automatically credited to its account, and it is debited from its account once it has paid or given money. BOP is therefore the inflows and outflows of cash. Inflows are credit and outflows are debit. The work at hand establishes the discussion of the three essential components of the BOP and the issues pertaining to its equilibrium. The current account consists of merchandise exports and imports and invisible exports and imports (OECD, 2000, p.151; Rana and Alburo, 1987, p.50). It is technically the flow of product and service offerings into a country. This also includes revenue on investments done publicly or privately. Generally, the current account consists of three essential components too. The first component is the net export. This is the biggest part of the current account, because it is around 80 to 90 percent. The next component is the net foreign income. This may be the income payment on stocks and bonds. Thus, at some point the net foreign income may be the interest payment on the bond or the dividend payment. Aside from the two components mentioned so far, the other part of current account is the foreign aid (Gaspar et al., 2013, p.93; Eicher et al., 2009, p.352; Clarida, 2007, p.38). Foreign aids are amount of money that the other economies may have directly transferred to a certain economy for the purpose of providing aid. This can also take place when a worker sends money home. Financial account is the next relevant component of BOP. It is the International transfer of capital, and attainment and clearance of assets that are non-financial and non-produced (OECD, 2005, p.45; International Monetary Fund, 2000, p.50). The financial account consists of real assets and financial assets. The real asset

Hyatt Walkway Essay Example for Free
Hyatt Walkway Essay In Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City, in 1981, connections supported the ceiling rods holding up the second and the fourth floor walkways has failed and collapsed and fell down on the first floor where was so crowded then and resulted in 114 deaths and over 200 injuries. Beside of the loss of lives, this collapse left millions dollars in cost behind and a number of principals lost their engineering licenses and number of firms went bankruptcy. As for the events triggered this collapse affecting the thousands of people adversely, the most critical and important factor was the change of the design of the hanger rod connections from one-rod to two-rod system to make the assembly task simpler doubling the load on the connector. Improper design utilizing abrupt section changes, resulting in stress concentrations Degradation of materials in a connection. Improper design due to lack of consideration of all forces acting on a connection, especially those associated with volume changes. Lack of consideration of large residual stresses resulting from manufacture or fabrication. These are the most important structural factors caused of the walkway collapse. And it is resulted from the conflictual and controversial communication between the Havens Steel Company and G.C.E International Inc. This can be deemed as the most important factor triggered the walkway collapse because of the fact that these two professional engineering companies obviously were not able to communicate each other in professional bounders and havenââ¬â¢t acted in a responsible way and understood the importance of the job they were doing. G.C.E International Inc., Daniel M. Duncan and Jack D. Gillum is the most blame for walkway collapse because of charging gross negligence, incompetence, misconduct and unprofessional conduct in the practice of engineering in connection with their performance of engineering services in the design and construction of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. G.C.E International Inc. bears the most responsibility because of the fact that they were the responsible one on design changing and they were failed on final check step by approving the design change opinion by the Havens Company and they have failed on it. G.C.E International Inc. and Havens Company were involved in key decisions because of the fact that Havens Company proposed the design change on as mentioned above and G.C.E International Inc. accepted this offer after receiving the shop drawings.

Arthroscopic Surgery :: Free Essays
Arthroscopic shoulder surgery helps many athleteââ¬â¢s speed up the healing process of many shoulder injuries. If an athlete requires some type of shoulder surgery many of them prefer to have the surgery done Arthroscopically so that they can resume playing or training to get back into their sport. Sometimes Arthroscopic surgery will even save some playerââ¬â¢s careers. Baseball pitchers are the most common athletes to require shoulder surgery. Their shoulders have a lot of pressure put on them when they pitch. If they donââ¬â¢t properly warm-up their arm they can have serious damage done to their shoulders. One of the most common shoulder injuries is a rotator cuff tear. A rotator cuff tear occurs when one of the four muscles, usually the Supraspinatus, surrounding your shoulder tears. There are two types of rotator cuff tears. An "acute" tear happens when a person experiences a sudden injury, such as falling down onto an outstretched arm, or lifting something very heavy with a jerking motion. The more common tear is a "chronic" tear. A chronic tear occurs over a long period of time, much like a hole getting worn into a sock after years of wear. To fix a rotator cuff tear you will pretty much need surgery. Arthroscopic surgery is the surgery that leaves the least amount of scarring as the surgeon only makes several small incisions (only à ¼-à ½ inch long). Bone anchors are usually placed into the humerus and attached to the cuff back down to the humerus where it belongs. These anchors are very small but strong. They are usually made of metal, plastic, or a special material that is absorbed by your body over time. Arthroscopic surgery is preferred by most physicians because of the recovery time and the limited scarring. If the tear is fixed arthroscopically the patient has much less pain than if the tear is fixed with open surgery.

Lakota Way
English 100-13 21 October 2009 Family Virtues Virtues are usually taught through the eyes of the wise, also known as the elder. In the book The Lakota Way, by Joseph M. Marshall III, his tribe teaches virtues though story telling. The virtues of the Lakota tribe and those of my family are more similar then I had anticipated, although we do have our differences. The Lakota Way, stories and lessons for living, is a book written in 2001 by Joseph M. Marshall III. Marshall dedicates his book to Kimberly Jo Schumidt and Joseph N.Marshall II. The stories he tells through out his book are those that have been passed down from his family about the Lakotaââ¬â¢s and their virtues. Marshallââ¬â¢s stories are based on morals and virtues. While reading chapter 3, ââ¬Å"Respect,â⬠of The LakotaWay I came to find several similarities between my familyââ¬â¢s view and the Lakotaââ¬â¢s view. Koskalaka is a young man, in this chapter, who goes out hunting in the woods and stumbles acr oss the Deer Woman whom his grandmother had told him about.His grandmother had mentioned that she knew a man who was never home because the Deer Woman took him, so he should avoid her as much as possible. The Lakotas are trying to teach respect to young Koskalaka. They are showing him that you should respect your family and those around you because one day you can lose it all. Like the Lakotas, my family has been taught respect through are generations. My family has taught us that family comes first and we must respect each other and ourselves. They have said that if we do not respect ourselves then neither are we respecting our family name.I asked my mom what respect was when I was younger and she said,ââ¬Å"respect is not something to just play around with, you should always give people the respect they deserve and treat people the way that you would like to be treated. You shouldn't disrespect people and always keep in mind how you would feel if someone were to disrespect me the way that you are disrespecting them. â⬠I took her words to heart and learned a valuable lesson that day, so much so that now when I see someone disrespecting another I feel the need to intervene.In The Lakota Way, Koskalaka meets the deer woman and remembers what his grandmother had told him and out of respect he declines her tempting offer to go with her. Just like Koskalaka respects his elder grandmother my siblings also have learned that we must respect people and more the elder. In the Lakota tribe, the grandmother said that when the Deer Woman takes them into her lodge she has sex with them but, when they wake the deer woman is no longer there leaving the man forgetful of his family and in search of the Deer Woman.Unlike the Lakotas, my family has gone out and seen their own type of deer woman wether it be with drugs, sex, or lies, but never have they forgotten about the rest of us. My family has learned to embrace one another when they have fallen into temptation, where the Lakotas would cast them out. My relatives have gone through many hardships and difficult situations but the morals have set into our heads like Koskalakaââ¬â¢s grandmother set into his head. The many men whom the Deer Woman lured into her lodge lost complete contact with their families and thus themselves.They left their familyââ¬â¢s worried about where they could be and what could be happening to them. The men became selfish and inconsiderate, andà no longer showing the respect and attention that they should have been showing to their family because of the Deer Woman. Dissimilar to the men and woman of The Lakota Way, our morals have been embroiled into our minds that family should always come first, regardless of the over all out come in any situation.The Lakotaââ¬â¢s virtues demonstrate virtues through story telling opposed to my family who teaches morals through real life example. They tell us stories of hardships one of our relatives have gone through and what w e have to do to avoid situations like that. The stories of respect in The Lakota Way are similar to those of my familyââ¬â¢s. The Lakotaââ¬â¢s are very virtues people who value their family and respect themselves just like the family of my own.
